                Breaking the Silence...Walk 2003

Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003 was a beautiful day.  We could not have asked for a more perfect day.  There were about 50 of us who stepped out in faith.  We have begun this journey's phase of "Breaking the Silence" in support of Suicide Prevention.

This walk is essential to our cause.  It gave S.P.E.A.R. a presence.  This walk gave individuals an opportunity to reach out.   As I was leaving the SPEAR tent a young lady stopped by.  She said she saw our banner and wanted to know how she could get involved.  She said, "My sister and brother completed suicide.  I want to become involved."  There were others that stopped to share comments like, "My son was diagnosed with clinical depression and he attempted suicide."  The same person said she attempted suicide.  She said she was better but wanted to be involved with a support group and wanted to attend our conference.  As we walked around the park, others approached seeking information.

Can you imagine, the walk was once around the park and we were there for a couple of hours.  This may be an indicator as to how badly or not  suicide prevention and survivor support programs are needed.  My gut feeling (my own experience as a survivor) says, the programs are in dire need.  People are out there, not knowing where to go for support or how to become more educated on this issue.

Hawai'i S.P.E.A.R. is reaching out.  This walk is just the beginning of our efforts.  Come Join us next year.    Our official Walk Photographer "Suz Elesarke".  Mahalo Suz!
