SUPPORT NEW NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION INITIATIVES BY SPAN USA

Overview of the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act

bulletProvides grants through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to states, public organizations, and nonprofits for the development of youth suicide prevention and intervention strategies.

bulletAuthorizes funds for a variety of programs related to suicide prevention and intervention, including screening programs for youth—such as TeenScreen—that identify mental health and behavioral conditions that place youth at risk for suicide.

bulletRequires states to distribute at least 85 percent of the funds to entities that will carry out the implementation of the state’s strategy—including education systems, juvenile justice systems, local governments, and private, nonprofit entities that are engaged in activities focused on mental health outreach and treatment, and suicide prevention and intervention.

bulletEstablishes a federal Suicide Technical Assistance Center that will provide guidance to state and local grantees in the implementation of the state strategy; create standards for data collection; and collect, evaluate, and disseminate data related to specific suicide prevention programs.

Many thanks to all those who communicated their support for these bills by using the SPAN USA Legislative Action Center. Our voice makes a difference!
