Mikey as Diane likes to call her son, was a student at Lokelani Intermediate School on Mau'i. He was born in Hayward, California. His older brother is Robert D. Heyerdahl and grandparents, Beverly and Bert Schifferling, reside in Kihei, Mau'i. Mikey played Pop Warner football for the Kihei Dolphins, and enjoyed fishing, diving and camping. He was known to be a daredevil who wanted to be a stuntman. Mom states, "He was brave, funny, smart, and had a heart filled with empathy for others. He was loyal to his friends and would jump into a fray to stick up for the little guy. He wasn't afraid to shame a bully. An obese young girl and an extremely effeminate young boy both contacted me after Michael died to tell me basically the same thing, that Mikey had been their rescuer more than once at school when they were being teased unmercifully by bullies. Mikey had quite the impish sense of humor as well. He would play elaborate pranks on people, mostly me...LOL...things to make me scream in fright and he would fall down laughing. He loved to laugh and was always laughing loudly. His laugh was infectious and even if he had done something which had made me furious, I would end up laughing because of his laughter! I have been known my entire life for my temper and my son was the only one who could diffuse it in minutes...with laughter. I miss him so much, I can still hear his laughter inside my head, but I wonder for how long? I miss him so damn much. I truly wonder how any of us survive this pain? Writing this is a bittersweet pain, brings both pain and fond memories. Mikey's STUNTS! Mikey was best known by his friends for his wild stunts...things like jumping off the roof of his school, jumping off the 2nd story balcony onto his trampoline in the yard below, eating live scorpions, riding his bike down a hill while standing on his head...and crashing, (are you getting a clearer picture of why I would get so furious? LOL), handstands on his skateboard (going down a hill, of course), etc. By 12 years old he already had casts for 2 broken wrists and a broken arm, a concussion and I just can't tell you how many near misses. He wasn't accident prone, he was quite athletic, played basketball and football with a league, he was just impulsive. Ever since he could walk, he was just a gung-ho kind of boy. His favorite things were fishing, diving, swimming, boating, camping, scary stories or movies, his dog, Shadow, bugs, snakes, bicycle tricks, skateboarding, football, boxing, and more fishing....and more fishing, that child was born with the fishing gene! He had so many plans for his future, he wanted to be a cop or a stuntman and he wanted to own a boat. He had his own style and was so loved by many. A Poem for Mikey from Mom
